The operation went well and was done by the head surgeon of cardiac surgery. It wasn't like he needed that sort of skill level but, he happened to be available so it was nice to know he had the best.
Turns out the surgeon had just come from a heart transplant. Wow... I heard that went well also.
He is still on the respirator. Hopefully tomorrow we will know the plan for him so we will know when he gets to come home. But, this was a huge step and he is responding really well.
Here are some familiar screens just so you can see what it looks like with him off of ECMO.
Here is the vent
And here is his Xray. Check out how different it is from a few days ago.
Things to note.
1) His bilirubin is high but, hopefully that was because of ECMO. Its just something they will be watching.
2) They were able to stitch the artery back together but, they couldn't with the vein they used. Apparently this is pretty common. It sort of freaked us out until we talked to nurse Ian who explained they use the exterior jugular (look up by the left ear). Apparently the body will compensate and this is the standard process. It isn't a major vein just something to note.
Anyway, that's enough for the tech talk. Here are some pictures.
And a movie (He is sleeping)
Have a good night.

night night, Lucas
ReplyDeleteJess, he totally looks like your dad!
ReplyDeletewuhoo!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing kid. So happy right now.
ReplyDeleteBest news yet! And thanks for the info on the PPHN. It sounds like PPHN is a description of what he has/had, but infection may be the underlying cause. I thought that PPHN could be the diagnosis in itself. Sorry, I'm not a neonatologist. :)
ReplyDeleteHoping he gets extubated very soon and you get to hold him! And feed him, and all the normal baby stuff. He is now just an average NICU baby, which is good and boring like you said.
Yeah, baby!
ReplyDelete"Extubated" is my new favorite word!
