I am useful

Hi all,

I'm pleased to tell you that I got Lucas to drink 13 CC of milk today.  Its been a concern that since he gets all of the milk through his feeding tube he hasn't learned to nurse and breath at the same time.  So I wore this funky getup

Its basically a tiny tube on a syringe.  I get him to suck on my fingertip and give him tiny squirts of milk.  I got him to take 7 CC this morning and 6 tonight.

This is really great and hopefully he will be nursing soon.

Also to note...

  • They have him on the most minimum volume of oxygen.  1/8 a liter a minute.  So its hardly on.  But, he seems to like it and gets mad at them when they turn it off.
  • He gets a blood test tomorrow so we will see how his liver enzymes and bilirubin count are
  • He might get moved to the floor tomorrow and out of the NICU, the nurses will miss him.
  • He might get the PICC out tomorrow
  • The Seattle Detective Unit came by the NICU and gave presents to the babies.  Tessa got something really big out of that.
Everything is going really well for him.

Here is one more picture of him and his stuffed animal friends.  We named them after things he has conquered.
Polar Bear = Acidosis
Dog = ECMO
Penguin = Tachypnic (Taa-Kip-Nick)
Bear = Atelectasis

Good Night

  1. Dad is doing great with the finger feeds. I only got 2 cc into him this afternoon. But he was really sleepy and drowsy. We'll need one more stuffy animal for him to conquer--cholestasis. Perhaps a yellow monkey or chicken?

  2. Sounds like he might be leaving sooner than expected. I think you guys have an amazing sense of humor about all of this. It's so nice.
