Lucas has left the NICU

We are now on the "floor" with all the normal patients.  Lucas is doing fine.  As far as I can tell these are the hurdles left.

  • He needs to be eating
    • We don't want to take him home and use the feeding tube.  So we are working with him to eat like a normal baby.
  • His billirubin and enzymes are a little weird
    • They will be charting this
  • He is still on oxygen.
    • Its at .1 liters per minute.  That is the lowest setting.  I'm going to argue that we don't really need that anymore.
  • He is being weened off the morphine.
    • He is doing well and they are dropping the amounts.  For an infant his size it has a half life of about 8 hours.  He gets .3 ml/hr and when it gets to .1 ml/hr its pretty much negligible.
That's pretty much it except that added a new stuffed green alligator to his posse called Cholestasis.

Here is a picture of him in his new home.

  1. Great news! We were in the NICU for 3 days with Elisabet and can only begin to understand all that you've been through. It sounds like you have had a great hospital, doctors, and staff. That is so important. Good for you for advocating and asking questions. Both Wren and Elisabet had to take that high calorie formula- it seems like it's kind of nasty stuff. Neither of them kept it down well and they made horrible faces while drinking it. He'll get the hang of breastfeeding. For some babies, it just takes longer. Leif wasn't good at it and it was enough work I almost gave up.

  2. He is so cute in the bed. I can't believe how fast it has gone. Five days ago I wouldn't have thought he would be "on the floor" and now look at him. This is so great !! What progress!! What troopers you have all been!!

  4. Wonderful news! Sorry to hear you did not get a private room. I guess it's impossible this time of year. Children's is too busy. Very puzzling about his LFTs and bili. If there is anything to find, the GI folks at Children's will find it and fix it! They are great. Nationally renowned. I'd be curious to hear who the GI attending is, and who his main attending pediatrician is. :) Is he on a team with residents?

We hope to visit Lucas and meet him soon!

  5. Lauren has several things to say
    1) night night Lucas
    2) she wants to pat his bottom and sing to him
    3) she yells sporadically "Lucas is okay!"
